Post 1: Age of Enlightenment

Have you ever heard about the "Age of Enlightenment"?
In the 18th century there was a movement in western philosophy which realized the sad state of the human condition and need for major reforms. It questioned traditional instiutions, customs and morals. It is said that the "Age of Reason", a movement in the 18th century that advocated the use of reason in the reappraisal of accepted ideas and socialinstitutions, largely inspired the Enlightenment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_Enlightenment
Given the state of the human condition today, an obvious question arises: do we need another age of reason/enlightenment to bring about a movement. There are many things that are going on the right path on our planet and many events take place that make us believe that several things are going on the wrong path. Darfur, Tibet, Iraq...how often do the events in each of these places make us think of what our civilization has come down to?
Perhaps, we need several events to push us into a revolutionary mode and push us to bring about a movement. Can there however be number put into the amount of human suffering required before we all realize that we need a movement? Although from the scope of the tragedies, a solution may seem hopeless but we know that several people and several organizations are trying to make a difference and actually, help out the needy.
